Microsoft End-of-Support Deadlines: 10 Systems That Need a Migration Plan

A practical guide to eight Microsoft platforms that are unsupported or approaching end of support, why they matter, and how to build a measured migration plan.

Organizations still running older Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, or Windows desktop releases should know exactly where those systems sit in Microsoft’s support lifecycle. Several widely deployed products have already passed their final support date, and Windows Server 2016 is next. That does not mean every unsupported system has been breached. It does mean the organization should inventory the estate, confirm exposure, and make a time-bound decision about controls, migration, or retirement.

Microsoft publishes defined support timelines for many commercial products through its Microsoft’s Fixed Lifecycle Policy. The product pages below are the primary sources for the dates in this guide.

Why end of support is a business issue

After a product’s final support date, teams lose the normal stream of product security updates and vendor support tied to that lifecycle. The impact is broader than patching. Older platforms can complicate audit and cyber-insurance discussions, recovery testing, application and driver compatibility, and day-to-day support.

The practical risk depends on the workload. A Windows Server hosting an isolated reporting tool is different from a public-facing Exchange server or a SQL Server that holds finance, customer, or production data. The first job is to identify what is running, who depends on it, how it is exposed, and what a safe target state looks like.

The 10 lifecycle milestones to check now

The dates below are Microsoft lifecycle dates. Recheck the linked source before making a budget or compliance decision, because editions, servicing channels, and paid Extended Security Update options can change the practical path for a specific environment.

1. Windows Server 2012 R2

Extended support ended October 10, 2023. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

If the server remains in production, confirm whether Extended Security Updates apply, then set a dated plan for replacement, migration, or retirement. Inventory hosted applications, identity dependencies, backup recovery, and vendor support before choosing the target.

2. SQL Server 2014

Extended support ended July 9, 2024. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

Treat the database as part of an application system, not a standalone upgrade. Map application compatibility, integration jobs, reporting, data retention, performance requirements, and rollback before selecting an upgrade, managed database, refactor, replacement, or retirement path.

3. Windows 10 Home and Pro

Support ended October 14, 2025. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

Separate devices that can move to Windows 11 from those that need hardware replacement, application remediation, or a different operating model.

4. Exchange Server 2016 and 2019

Extended support ended October 14, 2025 for both versions. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

On-premises email is a high-consequence workload. Confirm the supported on-premises path, a Microsoft 365 migration plan, or a short-term control plan with an end date.

5. SQL Server 2016

Extended support ended July 14, 2026. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

This is a current assessment priority. Database upgrades often surface application compatibility and integration assumptions.

6. SharePoint Server 2016

Extended support ended July 14, 2026. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

Identify critical sites, workflows, customizations, permissions, and records requirements before selecting Microsoft 365, hybrid, or supported on-premises options.

7. Windows Server 2016

Extended support ends January 12, 2027. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

This is the nearest major Windows Server deadline still ahead. Plan now for application certification, identity, licensing, network, and recovery work.

8. SQL Server 2017

Extended support ends October 12, 2027. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

Use the remaining runway for an inventory, dependency map, compatibility testing, and a budgeted migration sequence.

9. Windows Server 2019

Extended support ends January 9, 2029. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

Include it in infrastructure roadmaps now. Early planning avoids another last-minute server refresh.

10. SQL Server 2019

Extended support ends January 8, 2030. Microsoft Lifecycle source.

Not urgent today, but worth tracking alongside application roadmaps, licensing, and cloud or platform decisions.

A practical response: assess before you migrate

A safe migration program starts with evidence, not a blanket upgrade project. Build an inventory of operating systems, database engines, editions, patch levels, hosting locations, owners, and data classifications. Then map each workload’s applications, integrations, service accounts, scheduled jobs, storage, backup and recovery, and business processes.

Rank workloads by exposure and business impact. Public-facing or internet-connected systems, sensitive data stores, systems without proven recovery, and platforms supporting revenue, operations, or regulated processes usually deserve earlier attention. The target may be a supported version, a cloud service, a refactored application, a replacement product, or retirement.

For each migration wave, define success before cutover: data reconciliation, performance thresholds, security controls, rollback conditions, user acceptance, and a decommission plan. That structure keeps an urgent support deadline from turning into an avoidable outage.

Questions to ask your IT team or provider

  • Which Windows Server, SQL Server, Exchange, SharePoint, and Windows desktop versions are in production today?
  • Which unsupported systems are internet-facing, hold sensitive data, or support a critical business process?
  • Which applications, integrations, service accounts, and reporting jobs depend on each legacy platform?
  • Do we have a tested backup and recovery process for each high-risk workload?
  • Do we have a funded 12 to 24 month modernization plan with named owners and a realistic sequence?
